When Rom Koffie’s production environment suddenly went down, the root cause was a classic case of vendor lock‑in. Their roasting line depended on obsolete PLCs that were no longer supported, leaving them vulnerable and unable to adapt. The situation was urgent: production had to be restored quickly, without compromising coffee quality or supply to their customers.
OTmatic acted fast. Together with Rom Koffie, we designed and implemented a new control system based on an open architecture, eliminating vendor lock‑in and creating a future‑proof foundation. The legacy PLCs were replaced by a modern, automated control layer that is easier to maintain, extend, and standardize across the facility—at a total project cost significantly lower than alternative proposals from traditional automation suppliers.

On top of this control layer, we developed a new MES application tailored to Rom Koffie’s operations. The system handles production planning, batch tracking, and collection of production data. Operators can now follow each roasting batch in real time, on site or remotely, with full traceability from green bean to finished product.
Data is structured from the ground up, using a unified, consistent model, turning raw signals from the roasters into meaningful information. This powers custom trending and dashboards that allow Rom Koffie to analyze and compare temperature profiles across different roasts. As a result, they can optimize the roasting process, shorten roasting times, and guarantee consistent cup quality—translating expertise into repeatable, data‑driven decisions.

The transition from the old to the new system was completed smoothly, without disrupting coffee deliveries to Rom Koffie’s customers. By combining Rom Koffie’s deep roasting expertise with OTmatic’s open, data‑centric automation approach, the facility now runs more efficiently, with higher roasting capacity, better insight, and a solid, cost‑effective platform for continuous improvement.
